San Diego Alligator Lizard
Alligator Lizards are found along much of North America's West Coast, from southern Washington to northern Baja California. Though respectful of our size, they have little fear of humans, and are often found in our yards and garages. That lack of fear, and their size, can sometimes lead to a nip on the finger for the more curious of us! Though quick to defend themselves, these lizards are very desirable in that they feed on the creepy crawlies that most of us really do fear!

The tails of adult Alligator Lizards can be twice the length of the lizards body. You can see in this photograph this female Alligator Lizard has lost her tail (where the tail pattern stops), most likely to a predator (the most common urban predator are House Cats). Her tail will never grow to the length she had before the loss, nor will it regain the striking pattern it once had.
