Cows and Calves
For the most part cow Moose are placid creatures. The main exception to this rule is when they have new calves! Calving season, which is the later half of May here in south-central Alaska, is a time to be especially wary around these great beasts. Yet every year people, and dogs, are stomped by Moose just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Given that fact, and the fact we have approximately 1200 Moose in the Anchorage bowl, most of us take calving season in wary stride!

This cow Moose is watching a passing jogger, who has a dog. Cow Moose don't like dogs, even when born and raised around them as this cow has been. They will tolerate the dogs, except in calving season. That is when dogs should be on a leash!
