Snowshoe Hare
The white "rabbit" of the North, is not always white...nor is it a rabbit! Some call it the Varying Hare as it changes from summer brown to winter white each year, in an attempt to blend in with it's surroundings. As for the difference between Rabbits and Hares; Rabbit are born blind hairless while Hares are born with hair and are able to see. There, aren't you glad you asked!

on November 27, 2022This photo, and the next one, were taken in Denali National Park during a September 2009 trip. That fall we saw many many Snowshoe Hares, who had eaten themselves out of house and home. This Hare was climbing the brush to eat bark. Notice that the bark has been pulled from these shrubs at great height already, which means there will that much less to eat once snow falls.
