This fast moving Ground Squirrel lives in the American Southwest and Baja California. Since it moves about during the day, this squirrel copes with the desert heat by lying flat out on shaded ground (such as under shrubs and in it's burrows), exposing it's sparsely haired belly to the cool Earth. It also uses it's ample tail as shade by carrying it laid over it's back!
