Nine-banded Armadillo
Armadillos are very curious creatures. They, like humans, are susceptible to leprosy (which makes them prime candidates for lab testing). They can smell food (grubs, beetles, termites, worms, ants, etc) through eight inches of soil. They can inflate their intestines and float across a body of water, or run along the bottom given their ability to hold their breath for as long as six minutes. They can spring three feet straight up in the air when frightened (a trait which does not serve them well when an automobile is passing overhead). And they always have four identical young. These photos were taken in Florida, right at dark (Armadillos are nocturnal for the most part). The photo quality is not great, though passable!
