Chukar
The Chukar is another one of those successful feral species here in North America. It's a transplant originally from Asia; from Israel and Turkey, through Afghanistan, through India, along the inner ranges of the Western Himalayas to Nepal. Here in North America it can be found in the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, the high desert areas of California, and parts of Canada. Like in it's native range, this bird thrives in areas of rocky open hillsides with grass and scattered shrubs. Many of those living in prime Chukar habitat have never seen the bird, but they have certainly heard it's call. This is a bird that can't keep quite!
