The Red-shafted Northern Flicker is the western representative of the two Flickers in North America (the Yellow-shafted lives in eastern North America). The Flickers are an odd woodpecker in that they prefer to feed on the ground. There is one other oddity about these birds. And that is they have over a hundred common names!
