Acorn Woodpecker
In many areas of their range, such as Cuyamaca Rancho State Park east of San Diego, one finds trees, alive and dead, whose entire trunks are completely riddled with small holes stuffed...with Acorns. The funny thing is these guys don't seem to interested in the Acorns in the bark of dead trees whose bark has sloughed off. Pails of Acorns can be lying at the foot of a dead tree, yet this Woodpecker will let them lie.

on October 10, 2022An Acorn Woodpecker rests on an unusual perch, for this species. Possibly it's not that the perch is unusual, but that the bird is taking a break from storing Acorns in some tree's bark!
