American Avocet
The American Avocet is a native of North America. It nests primarily in the Great Basin and the Canadian prairie regions, then winters along the southeastern US coast and the California coast. The species uses that long up curved bill to sweep the water in search of tiny shrimp-like crustaceans. I photographed this bird, at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Area, as it fed in the evening sun.
