Lapland Longspur
The Lapland Longspur is quite common in the Arctic, though I can't personally call this bird "common". During the winter, here in the Anchorage area, I find a few hanging around small flocks of Snow Buntings. During the spring migration, when the birds are headed back to the Arctic to nest, large flocks are to be found feeding on last year's seeds. Surprisingly these birds, in large groups, sound like musical Redwing blackbirds!

Though this lone bird stood out in a flock of Snow Buntings it took me a second to grasp that a Lapland Longspur had joined the flock of white birds. Sometimes one's brain doesn't instantly recognize what the eye sees!
