Elegant Trogon
This bird was once called the Coppery-tailed Trogon. Now it is the Elegant Trogon. I like the "elegant" moniker, as it fits this beautiful bird. The Elegant Trogon is found in but a very few places in the United States; most of those places being pockets of suitable habitat in southern Arizona along the border with Mexico. And that is where I found this male. These birds hunt by sitting on low branches in thick growth where they scour the ground below them for a meal. In the seven hours I trailed this bird I watched it catch, and eat, four lizards and a few crickets. Every once in a while, it would utter a low call as if searching for a mate, then fly on, and start searching for another meal. Never did I hear a return call, or see another member of it's species.
