Cactus Wren
Cactus Wrens are the largest of the North American wrens, and are found from the southwestern United States through central Mexico. They are also, at least to me, the sound of the desert. Their calls make my mornings when I visit the desert (go to http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cactus_Wren/sounds to hear their calls). And though this species is noted as a late riser, compared to many birds, once they get going...they are going! They are, without a doubt, one of my favorite birds.

Cactus Wrens usually build their nests in very inhospitable places, such as this Cholla Cactus in Phoenix, Arizona. Doing so helps keep nest raiders at bay!
