Northern Saw-whet Owls
The Northern Saw-whet is a tiny owl (it stands but 8" tall on average), which some would say is usually quite tame and therefore very approachable. All one has to do to approach one, is find it! And therein lies the trick. These miniature owls usually tuck themselves snugly up against the bole of a tree with thick over-hanging branches, making themselves extremely hard to locate. You may find it easier to locate birds by listening for their call, which is a very monotonous series of low whistled notes on one pitch. It sounds a bit like too-too-too-too-too.....you get the idea. Now go stand in the dark and listen!
