Bonaparte's Gull
Bonaparte's Gull is not your typical "sea gull". One of only five black-headed gulls in North America, it's small light body, long wings, and buoyant flight remind one more of a tern than a gull. Unlike any other gull, Bonaparte's Gulls nest in evergreen trees in western Canada's and Alaska's Boreal Forests. This gull rarely scavenges, instead preferring to hunt for plankton, insects, and fish over open water. These characteristics, and more, separate the Bonaparte's Gull from the "Sea Rats", as many like to think of gulls!

I "caught" this Bonaparte's Gull as if lifted off from the surface of Westchester Lagoon in Anchorage, Alaska.
